contrast is one thing being different to another. we were introduced to Ittens seven contrasts in the session.
- contrast of tone - juxtaposing light and dark values. this could be monochromatic. tone is seen by the rods in eyes . tone concerns brightness a colour. the bigger the difference between light and dark tones the bigger the contrast.
- contrast of hue - juxtaposing of different hues. greater the distance between hues on a colour wheel greater the contrast. equidistant.
- contrast of saturation - juxtaposing of light and dark values and their relative saturations. how colourful a colour is and in comparison of other colours.
- contrast of extension - perceived colour. formed by assigning proportional field values in relation to the visual weight of a colour. also contrast of proportion. colours light and dark and light and heavy - blue is the heaviest, yellow is the lightest. contrast of extension means that balance of colour doesnt mean an equal amount of each.
- contrast of temperature - juxtaposing hues that can be considered cool or warm. also contrast of warm and cool. warmest is orange coolest is blue. colours with temperature value alter the temperature of other colours when compared.
- complementary contrast - juxtaposing complementary colours from the colour wheel. complementaries do not go together.
- simultaneous contrast - formed when boundaries between colours perpetually vibrate. brain starts to introduce colours absent to what we see. yellow and green lines together will become more orangey (red is missing). the eye tries to make up whats not there.
we were then asked to egt into groups and asked to get 2 sets of 5 objects. we got 5 yellow and 5 purple and got a neutral sheet of paper and a yellow, red, blue, green, orange and asked to explore the different contrasts.
duck - yellow. high contrast of hue with blue. yellow on yellow - duck makes paper look more desaturated. duck on red and yellow makes duck look heavier.
toy - violet. grey makes violet more saturated. orange makes violet less saturated. violet darker on blue than on red.
SUBJECTIVE COLOUR.
contrast of extension important in type - considering how much of a colour to use with another so text is readable/legible. colours impose their complementary colours on the eye when on a neutral background. yellow on grey - grey starts becoming violety.
orange is forced from the blue because its missing.
there are only 3 colours not 4 the eye is confuised.
same as above - both 'bold' i
