having completed the design of the 3 posters we were given the third part of this brief which was to 'produce a mail shot that distributes, disseminates and reenforces your message to and appropriate list of recipients.' i was quite excited to carry out this brief as i think it was a good chance to further my message and produce something a little different.
i understood my message and wanted to consider how i could portray and focus in to a number of important organisations.
i considered first what i wanted to say to the people i was mailing to. i thought it important to narrow and fully define my message so it would be stronger and better understood. i think this body of thought was a good idea because it helped me gain a better focus from the start of the brief.
i began by doing some quick designs off the top of my head. simply recording ideas as they came to me and with out any constraint at this point. this meant i had more to work with and consider when doin later designs.
having thought about my content a bit i wanted to put some effort into designing the actual envelope as it is an important part of the mail shot and the brief. the initial ideas i had were, however, a bit random and need more focus and refining.
i thought that it would be interesting to make the mail shot itself more interesting than just words and image on a flat sheet and so started thinking about how i could design something that was interactive and may therefore be more memorable and impacting.
the idea of a folding insert that creates multiple messages when interacted with, i think, was a good idea and held some weight in terms of its potential effectiveness.
i thought about how the fold mechanism could reveal different things and what this may mean when received. i like the idea of the 'bin diver' as a pictorial play on words and it does present the message in a fuller way when there is a figure to associate the problem to, in terms of recipients relating their waste of food to the fact that many homeless people are hungry and have to steal from bins to eat.
the above is the mock of my insert when open and below when it is folded over. the 'bin diver', when the recipient folds the insert over, successfully reaches the bin presenting the idea that by 'opening' their bins to fareshare a recipient can help feed the homeless and hungry.
the mocks were successful in design and mechanism and so i decided that this would be the one i produced.
i took further consideration when it came to my envelope because this is the first thing the recipient will see and so must be impacting and interesting making them want to open it. i thought about having a lot of writing or some impacting images but felt this may be a bit too forceful and over the top. i considered illustrating the inside of the envelope aswel but then thought that people are unlikely to take notice of the inside of an envelope as this is usually the first thing thrown away.
i thought this idea might be effective as it is in your face and comes strait to the point but then i considered the fact that it does look a bit like sick and therefore is quite repulsive and so may be counterproductive when in the hands of the recipient. they might simply be offended by it and so not even look at it. i thought how i could tone it down but then that would defeat the point of this particular design and so i decided to just consider other ideas.
when it came to thinking about who to send the mail shot to i had no trouble. the basis of the mail shot is to encourage people who are likely to produce a lot of food wastage to the fareshare organisation and so it was logical to consider companies/organisations who's main trade is food supply. i thought about the food that would be most easily salvaged and reused to suit fareshare's needs and so considerd the above choices.
my final designs are somewhat different to a lot of my potential ideas but i think they work well as a set and relate well to the three posters designed. i like the presentation and the stock because its quite 'raw' and activist. i decided to do the mail shot by hand because most of the previous briefs ive completed using computer aided design programmes and digital print. i feel as though ive been neglecting the hand rendered elements of design, of which im most interested in. i think my designs are aesthetically pleasing and portray the message compotently.
