OUGD404. Design Principles. Anatomy of type. Part 2. A History.

2
we were showed a powerpoint presentation about the history of typography with a brief explination of typography.

we then presented the 5 alphabets we had each chosen from the college font library. these were chosen based on no constraints and mine were>

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
century gothic

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
prestige elite std
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
bauhaus 93
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
mona lisa solid ITC TT
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
Cambria (body)

as a group we pooled our examples and put them into 5 recognisable categories that we as a group had decided on>

  • SERIF
  • SANS SERIF
  • ITALIC
  • VARYING WEIGHTS
  • A SINGLE WEIGHT THROUGHOUT

we then presented our chosen categories to the class and as a class came up with a list of main categories that appeared multiple times. these were:

  • handwritten
  • calligraphic
  • script
  • blackletter
  • bold
  • decorative

fred then explained the main different processes of printing or 'recording' type and copy.
  • Stone-chiseled or carved into stone.
  • Sable-brush or soft, maliable marker
  • Bone-carved to nib and used with ink
  • Wood-carved or cut into letterforms either alone or embossed on a board
  • Lead-use of moulded type and the letterpress
  • Silicon-computer chips to produce digital type

at the end of the session we were to swap our 5 typefaces with another person and, using http://www.identifont.com/index.html, we had to try and identify each typeface>

  1. CHAPARRAL PRO
    chaparral pro
estimated point size: N/A-no capital set was provided
    designer: Carol Twombly for Adobe
    designed: 2000

    2. Futura condensed.
    estimated point size: 1028pt
    desinger: Paul Renner
    designed: 1998

    3. Lucida Blackletter.
    estimated point size: 971pt
designer: Charles Bigalow & Kris Holmes
    designed:1992

    4. Matura Script Capitals.
    estimated point size: 657pt
    designer: Imre Reiner
    designed: 1938

    5. Braggadocio.
    estimated point size: 685pt
    designer: W.A. Woolley
    designed: 1930

after locating and recognising the above typefaces i then had to pick one to study in futher depth.
i chose to research Matura Script Capitals.>

    MATURA SCRIPT CAPITALS.
designed by imre reiner in 1938.
    copyrighted by monotype classic fonts
    published by Adobe and Monotype
Matura was designed by the Hungarian wood engraver and type designer Imre Reiner in 1938 and released by the Monotype Corporation. Matura is a bold upright script that looks as if it were written with a broad-edged pen; a set of vibrant near-flourished capitals, called scriptorial capitals, broadens the usual range of script faces. Matura’s distinctive lines make it appropriate for advertising uses as well as text headings, and for informal work like cards, invitations, and announcements.

apex has single leftward serif flicking downward slightly
very flowing font, lots of curves and flicks and loops
    very hand written style typeface
lots of dashes and quick strokes
    some counters left open
hint of serifs but somewhat sporadic
varying weights at different points mimicking hand style
some straight or chiseled corners or edges
    lower case much more ordered
