typography is deep
typography is based on character/illustration.
type is speech made visible.
the accents and emphasies of speech are translated into type.

Typeface>
a collection of characters, letters, numbers, symbols, punctuation that have the same distinct design.

Font>
the physical means that are used to produce the typeface like lithography, letterpress, or computer aided design.
a single weight, width, stroke etc within a typeface eg bold or italic.

four main types of type>

GOTHIC
stripped down and simple, sans-serif, modern, more illustrating the clarity of each glyph.

ROMAN
serif fonts that are romanesque. designed to work with stone etc.

BLOCK
thicker, heavier weights, print blocks. designed to be used with wood blocks.

SCRIPT
fluid, hand writeen, sweeps/strokes, flowing

the key distinction between ariel and helvetica is ariel has rounded full stops and helvetica has square full stops.
