OUGD504. Design Production. Studio Brief 2. Design for Web.

today we were introduced to the new brief within the design production module - design for web. we had a session with simon and he took us though the basics of web and website design and gave us an introduction to what we would be doing within the brief.

- history of the internet -

  • CERN - the company where it began. scientists working there didnt want to have to walk back and forth to show work so created a network to allow sending of files between computers.
  • Tim Bernes Lee - started the web to make it easier to send files. was purely text based at that point.
  • WWW - later became world wide because recognised as super fast connectivity
  • Steve Jobs - created the worlds first server on a NEXT (first modern computer) on his own.
  • Image - first image hosted on the internet was much latert on - in PNG format
- Terminology of the Internet -
  • Code - all websites made up by commands in 'code' format
  • HTTP - a transferer between an online server and you at home
  • URL - uniform resource locator - the connector to the server for the websites access to their folder
  • HTML - hyper text mark up language - language allocated
  • CSS - cascading style sheets - another web language - relates to aesthetics
  • FTP - file transfer protocol - sending info between computers/to web server
  • CMS - content management system - once a site becomes liev it needs to be managed - web has to change to be successful - dynamic
all of the above can be worked with in dreamweaver

  • Skeuomorphism - in the past websites had textures to make them look like surfaces in real life - buttons looking metallic, pages flipping in a ebook - this however it irrelivent because its on a screen not real life so why try to imitate it.
  • Skeuomorph - derivative that maintains traits of original design that isnt necessary
  • Responsive - web design is still a new concept - develops on a daily basis and over time web trends occur. responsive websites work/adapt to a variety of media like computer, tablet, phone etc.

- Website Design -
it is important to consider these questions when designing for web.
  • what is the purpose of the website? is there a point to it existing?
  • who is the target audience? will they understand it?
  • what does the target audience need from the website? what is the websites aim?

after this we looked at some examples of websites and simon asked us to shout words we thought explained or desicribed each one. we were also asked to answer the questions above about each website.
