1. What skills
have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you
have applied them?
I have developed a variety of web and print based
practical skills.
My screen printing abilities (and the other uses like spot
varnish or flock/foiling) have increased greatly and I am much more familiar
with the process. My preparation for print has also got a lot better and I understand
now more than ever the need to prepare and proof before printing. my understanding of how a print will appear depending on stock and printing process hasd also become more entrewnched within my design practice.
my understanding of web based design has gone from nothing to a basic but informed point of understanding. i get the basics of web coding and feel as though my abilities to use the adobe suite in line with web design have also improved greastly.
in particular i think my undertsanding and ability to design relevant and quality branding and logos has really improved. this is something i have enjoyed a lot in this module and hope to maintain and improve it further.
2. What approaches to/methods of design production have
you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
my approaches to production have broadened a lot but i feel i need to focus them down again now. my undertsanding of production processes has really improved with my research into the production aspect of design for print. i understand book binding more so, the various methods of printing, what materials and methods are most appropriate for the design job.
my digital preparatory skills have also imporved like setting up digital doccuments for the right print method. things such as imposition have become more apparent to me and the consideration of web and printed colour and the differences these hold.
my development has been more informed in real time as ive been 'learning on the job' so to speak. the mistakes ive made have become apparent, most of the time after ive made them as opposed to spotting them early, but i have instantly recognised each one and have not struggled to think of a solution.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how
have/will you capitalise on these?
i think my strengths lie mainly in the aesthetic qualities of my work. my logos, i think, are quite strong and encompass the communicative aspects, relevant to the project, that i wanted to achieve. i have understood the ethos/intents of the project and transfereewd that to a visually communicative response.
i think my established concepts have also been strong and very relevant to my project and research.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how
will you address these in the future?
i think my main weaknesses lie in time management and organisation. my lack of regular commitment to my work has meant that at times ive rushed a lot of things and so havent done them thoroughly or with the care that is required.
at times my reazearch has been lacking, or more so the bredth of research i have undewrgone has been lacking. i sometimes just base my ideas around things i already know and dont delve further into a subject to find out mre which might be more relevant or informative to my project.
there are times as well when i neglect the most appropriate or efficient method of doing things and get stuck in a method that i am comfortable with but that is most liekly to be overly time consuming or not provide the output needed at that point.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently
next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
manage my time better in line with deadlines so that my work gets done on time and not rushed
do a little bit of work but often and then i will see a more seamless progression of my work and ca rectify mistakes with time to spare
do more primary research so that i can gain a more personal connection to and understanding of the topics involved in my project
think more about how font choice and colour will affect the communicative aspoect of the deswigns that i do and how the audience might recieve this
utilize as many processes (where apropriate) as possible to give more to my design answers
