OUGD505. Design Practice 2. STUDIO BRIEF 2

Responding to the feedback you received, you should develop and produce a range of responses relating to a minimum of two of the following areas of design:
Publishing & Editorial
Information & Way-finding
Branding & Identity
Product & Packaging
Retail & Promotion
Your work should practically and conceptually explore the possible products, ranges and methods of distribution that you have investigated and analysed in your primary and secondary research. Your work should also reflect your own creative ambitions within graphic design as well as being focused towards your chosen audience.

250 word rationale:

from the research i had gathered, both theoretical and practical, i found that and understanding of the techniques and methods involved in bouldering are a very useful thing to comprehend, particularly with new climbers. the research i found also showed that there is not much, currently in existence, that successfully explains different moves visually. furthermore, an understanding of bouldering terms can be useful in communicating with other climbers. for these reasons, and due to the chosen paths (info/wayfinding & product/packaging), i have decided to produce a series of minimal infographic posters, accompanied by a glossary of terms, aimed at outlining some of the moves common to bouldering. the target audience is that of new and novice climbers interested in bouldering. for this reason, the posters will be visually based and accompanied by simple written explanations. i intend to produce simple illustrations that successfully capture the physical movement involved in each move. these will be presented in a range of colours that i intend to base on the colours used on holds. the tone of voice will be simple and friendly, with an instructive, but guiding, undertone. in order to achieve this i will recognise the most important aspects of each move to explain the process with.

i began by drawing simple illustrations of each move and the process involved in each.

i then digitally vectorised them and chose a colour pallete for each one, using a lighter tone for the completed move to indicate the success.

i then used indesign to layout the posters on a3. i chose the typeface top modern because i thought it related well to bouldering

i then planned out and lay out the glossary of terms

i digitally printed the posters on to cartridge paper

i then cut out a net based on the size of the rolled up and stacked posters.

i sprayed stencilled hand prints to mimic chalk over the hand climbing

i involved a handle and finger holds in line with bouldering

i think that my outcomes on this brief were quite strong although there could have been more. i think the hand craft realtes well with the topic and is good design justification. i have leanred about crraft and information graphics a lot and rfeel i can better apply my knowledge now. i have also improved my climbing skills greatly. next time i will spend more time in trial and error to perfect my craft prior to the final outcome.
